Dr. Thompson is a Clinical Associate Professor, Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, University of British Columbia (UBC) and an Attending Cardiologist at St. Paul’s Hospital, where he was also the Director of the Cardiac Echo Laboratory from its inception in 1986 to 2010 and the Director of Cardiology Research from 1994 to 2001. He served as a Medical Advisor to Cardiac Services BC from 2008 to 2013.
Dr. Thompson received his Internal Medicine and Cardiology training at St. Paul’s Hospital (UBC) and his Cardiology Research training and Echocardiography Fellowship at Foothills Hospital, University of Calgary. Dr. Thompson is a reviewer for many cardiology journals and belonged to the scientific review committee of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and the Yukon. He directed a cooperative cardiology clinical trials group at St. Paul’s Hospital that evaluated emerging therapies, therapeutic strategies, and devices in cardiac patients.
He provides critical evaluation of the science underpinning PHEMI products, the workflow and communication processes, and the effect of PHEMI products on patient health outcomes.
